Endodontics is the dental specialty concerned with the treatment of dental conditions originating from the tooth's pulp, that is, the living tissue located within it. Endodontic treatment, in common parlance, means root canal treatment.
Tratament endodontic is the Romanian term for root canal treatment.
Endodontic treatment is a specialised type of dental treatment, the ultimate aim of which is to save a tooth with a diseased root from extraction. Endodontic therapy treats the pulp of the tooth. This is the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains blood vessels, nerve fibres, and cells. One of the causes of pulp disease is tooth decay, especially deeper decay, which exposes the pulp to bacteria from saliva. As a result, it becomes infected and its disease is irreversible. Endodontic treatment involves removing infected pulps, sterilising the root canals through mechanical and medicinal treatment, and sealing them with a paste to protect the area from new infections. The treatment is complex and is carried out in a minimum of 2-3 sessions, depending on the degree of pulp disease. When the infection is very advanced, the treatment may take longer. In order for the dentist to choose the most effective treatment option, they will recommend a dental X-ray and use an intraoral camera to get a much better view of the area.
Care sunt simptomele afecţiunilor pulpare dentare?
- the appearance of mild, bothersome pain
- the appearance of spontaneous pain, which radiates and is of long duration, not responding to painkillers
- the appearance of pain when chewing or clenching teeth
- the appearance of neuralgic pain with heat or cold, or violent pulsating pain.
- What are the effects of not treating these conditions in time?
- it can become complicated, reaching the alveolar bone level, which causes intense, long-lasting and nocturnal pain.
- can evolve into other, more complicated forms such as abscesses or phlegmon
- can influence the success of endodontic treatment
Ce este un abces?
When the dental pulp becomes infected, this infection spreads and advances to the bone around the tooth's root, forming an abscess.
Ce este flegmonul?
A phlegmon is an acute or subacute inflammation of the soft tissue. Being caused by infection of the dental pulp, it causes tissue destruction and the formation of pus.
What are the benefits of endodontic treatment compared to extraction?
The only alternative to endodontic treatment is extraction. The absence of one or more teeth creates problems with appearance, chewing and speech. After extraction, over time, there is a possibility of remaining teeth migrating, changes in occlusion (bite) and the onset of pain. Under these conditions, the extracted teeth must be replaced with a fixed prosthetic restoration, dental implants or a removable denture, which is taken out of the mouth. All of these involve surgical procedures, thus requiring additional time and material resources. Even though there are very good and effective modern prosthetic solutions for replacing teeth and implants of very high quality, nothing is better than your natural tooth.
What else do you need to do besides endodontic treatment?
Because a tooth that has undergone endodontic treatment, lacking the tissue inside the root canals, becomes brittle and can fracture, a final coronal restoration with a laboratory-made dental crown is recommended over a filling, as a simple filling can lead to fracturing. This should be done in a timely manner (within one month at the latest from the completion of endodontic treatment) to prevent tooth fracture and the ingress of saliva into the canals, which would cause reinfection. Endodontic treatment can be nullified by the invasion of bacteria into the canals. At the slightest sign of coronal damage, i.e., a fractured filling, a loose crown, the appearance of a crack/fracture, or decay on the tooth, the patient must consult their general dentist to have it repaired or replaced. Furthermore, it is essential to adhere to oral hygiene rules and have your dental status checked at least once a year.
