Periodontology is the branch of dentistry concerned with diseases of the periodontium. The general term for inflammatory and degenerative conditions of the supporting tissues of the tooth is called periodontopathy.
Afectiunile parodontale sunt boli care afecteaza tesuturile de sustinere a dintilor, inclusiv gingiile si osul de sub dinti.
Periodontal conditions represent an infection of the tissues that support the teeth. The gums are attached to the teeth in such a way that they form a V-shaped gingival sulcus at the base of the tooth. Periodontal diseases attack precisely in this sulcus, causing damage to the tooth and surrounding tissue. As the disease worsens, the gingival sulcus deepens.
Causes of gum disease
Bacteria that deposits on the surface of the tooth and subgingivally, on the bone and gums, causes the disease. Initially, no pain appears, but over time, if undiagnosed and untreated, it can have dire consequences, even leading to tooth loss. The disease occurs more frequently in adults and very rarely in children. Although it has a slow progression, inflammatory forms can appear suddenly.
Inflammations caused by:
- gingivitis, which causes gums to become sensitive and bleed spontaneously or when brushing; gingivitis manifests as bleeding, redness, ulceration, and swelling of the gums; it can be incipient, moderate, or severe
- periodontitis, which manifests as the formation of periodontal pockets between the tooth and the gum due to plaque which transforms into tartar
- advanced periodontitis, leading to the destruction of bone and periodontal ligament and, consequently, tooth loss from the dental arch.
De ce tipuri de parodontite există?
- adult periodontitis;
- Early-onset periodontitis;
- Juvenile periodontitis;
- pre-pubertal periodontitis;
- Rapidly progressive periodontitis (treatment-resistant) .
Gingivectomy means the surgical removal of gum tissue.
Gingivectomy represents a minor surgical procedure on the gums. It involves removing a small amount of gum tissue around one or more teeth with the aim of reconstructing the gum tissue. This procedure takes place after other non-surgical methods of improvement have been attempted and before the condition progresses to the point of endangering the ligaments and bone support of the teeth.
