4 simple New Year's resolutions for a bright and healthy smile

Good oral health is an essential part of your overall health and well-being. The New Year is an excellent time to set resolutions for establishing healthy habits that target oral health.

Whether you want to improve your teeth-brushing habit or follow dental treatment, the benefits of setting goals can be rewarding and motivating. Remember to make a small plan for achieving these promises step-by-step. Consistency is essential for any resolution you make.

Here are four simple oral health resolutions that will help you achieve a bright and healthy smile!

Buy yourself a new toothbrush

Of course, you must use your toothbrush twice a day for 3-4 minutes to effectively gain the benefits of optimal oral health. But would you also do those around you a favour and buy them a new toothbrush too!

New Year is the perfect time to do this, then in spring you'll do it again, then another brush, autumn comes... and so on... and so on... and so on...

Most dental professionals recommend changing your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles have fallen out or become damaged.

2. Start flossing

Is it really that difficult to use dental floss once a day?

Let's assume it's indeed a difficult task to get it between your teeth, so you often give up. But if you do it in small, baby steps...

Remove the problems and stress that flossing causes you in incremental steps, just as you would with an exercise program.

Set yourself a daily flossing goal until the end of June, start slowly and increase as you go. For example, you could start by flossing twice a week in January, three times a week in February... in March it will be four times... and so on... and so on... and so on...

By June, you will have achieved the goal of using dental floss daily, and you will be happy and delighted when the dentist notices that you have improved your gum health and reduced, and perhaps even eliminated, your risks of gum disease.

3. Visit the dentist at least twice a year

Most dentists recommend a minimum of 2 visits per year and more for individuals presenting with poorer oral health, such as smokers and those suffering from gum disease.

Regular dental visits help prevent future problems – another way to save money in the long run by avoiding expensive treatment down the line for issues that could have been addressed earlier.

Maintaining good oral health is an essential part of your overall health. It is also important to inform your dentist about any changes to your general health, as many medical conditions can also affect your oral health.

4. Eat more!

It has been scientifically proven that a simple smile can boost our mood, reduce stress, and even strengthen our immune system.

Often, the small things in life bring us the greatest joy. A simple smile can brighten our day and truly have a positive effect on our well-being. Smiles are FREE... good for us, contagious... so smile!
