Dental implants are today a durable, natural, aesthetic and functional option for replacing missing teeth.
Dentists used to replace missing teeth with bridges or dentures, but dental implants are often a better option. Moreover, they „look as good as natural teeth,” as Dr. Julea Ionel, a senior oral and maxillofacial surgeon at the Chiromax dental clinic in Galati, tells us.
A dental implant has three main parts:
- A titanium screw (referred to as an implant) embedded in the jawbone cavity, replacing the original root.
- A dental crown, which can be made of several materials
- A connector that joins the two pieces, called a prosthetic abutment
Unlike dentures which can be removed, a dental implant is permanent. The titanium screw fixes to the bone, making implants more durable than other options – one of the reasons why more and more Romanians have opted for these types of implants.
The implant is usually placed during two visits to the dental practice: the surgeon inserts the implant while you are under local anaesthetic. You wear a temporary partial denture or retainer until the gums heal, which often takes a few months. Then, the dentist attaches a dental crown, which can be: metal-ceramic, Zirconia-supported, or made of glass fibre polymers (BELLEGLASS). Each implant procedure can take up to 30 minutes.
In comparison with dental bridges, which often need replacing after 10 years, dental implants do not decay. Their placement does not interfere with healthy teeth and, with correct and careful maintenance, most implants can last a lifetime.
The average dental implant costs €500 per tooth, and this price does not include the dental crown. At Clinica Chiromax, we offer you the choice of two types of implants: standard dental implant and Nobel Biocare dental implant. The latter is a dental implant that incorporates the most advanced technology on the market, which is why patients receive a LIFETIME GUARANTEE, which is VALID INTERNATIONALLY. The cost of a Nobel Biocare implant is slightly higher, specifically €1300 per tooth.
„Patients view implants as a long-term investment in their oral health,” says Dr. Ionel Julea.
Implants have success rates of over 95% and are a good option for people who are healthy enough to undergo routine dental procedures and treatment.
Dental implants are not suitable for everyone. Dentists may avoid performing implant work for people who have gum disease or insufficient bone to support the titanium implant. Children, whose jaws are still growing, should wait until adolescence or later.
Ask yourselves these questions
If your dentist recommends an implant, Dr. Julea suggests you ask yourself these questions before booking an appointment.
Could anything Medical condition or lifestyle Could implants be an unsuitable option for me? Individuals with certain health issues – including uncontrolled diabetes and heart disease – and smokers may require further checks or tests.
Who will perform the implant surgery? Depending on its complexity, your dentist may recommend you see an oral surgeon or a prosthodontist (a dentist specializing in prosthetic dentistry) to place the implants.
Where and how is the implant done? To ensure you receive a quality implant produced in a reputable laboratory by a qualified dental technician, ask about the laboratory staff's certifications, materials, and training before the procedure begins.
How long will it take to heal? The gums will heal two to four months after the implant placement. „The upper jaw heals more slowly than the lower jaw,” says Dr. Julea.
