If you've ever had a dental abscess, you'll probably remember it very well. It's a rather unsightly and painful condition that most people remember for a long time. Generally, an abscess develops simply because an existing condition has been left untreated. So, if you've left a deep cavity untreated, there's a high probability that it will become infected and turn into a painful abscess.

\nA dental abscess is traditionally treated by a dentist, who will proceed to drain the pus collected inside the abscess and attempt to get rid of the infection. This sometimes requires root canal treatment, a procedure that can save the affected tooth; otherwise, the tooth must be removed by extraction.<\/p>\n

Dental abscesses never heal on their own; worse still, they can cause complications in neighbouring areas and throughout the body, which can sometimes be extremely serious. In this article, we will explain why it is so important not to postpone your visit to the dentist and to follow the dentist's recommendations for treating a dental abscess with utmost seriousness.<\/p>\n

I hate going to the dentist. What happens if I don't treat the abscess?<\/h2>\n

The problem with dental infections (or infections at the root of the teeth, to be precise) is that they occur below the gum line, and this area does not benefit from the cleaning properties of saliva. As the infection spreads, the dental pulp is destroyed and the jawbone begins to dissolve.<\/p>\n

During the period in which the infection sets in, it is possible for the pain to decrease in intensity, but the situation worsens, it does not improve. The reduction in pain is explained by the fact that, as the jawbone is affected, the nerve in the related region is also damaged, damage that can lead to the death of the nerve. The gradual destruction of the jawbone prevents the tooth from being held firmly in its socket, leading to its loss.<\/p>\n

Complications of an untreated dental abscess<\/h2>\n

An untreated or improperly treated dental abscess can develop in two directions:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. It fistulates at gum level, draining pus into the mouth; pain may improve due to pressure release, but as the infection spreads, the pain intensifies.<\/li>\n
  2. it advances into the bony area, infecting adjacent tissue and affecting neighbouring teeth; damage to the bone tissue leads to facial disfigurement and tooth mobility.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Due to the proximity of teeth to the brain, infections can spread rapidly from the tooth to the jaw and to the brain. Individuals with compromised immune systems are at an increased risk of bacterial infection spreading from their tooth to the rest of their body.
    \nOther complications of dental abscesses include:
    \n\u2013 maxillary sinusitis, when they appear in the area of the upper teeth
    \nthe spread of infection in the blood, which can lead to septicaemia<\/p>\n

    Bacterial infections originating from a dental abscess can be incredibly dangerous if they spread to the jaw, neck, or brain. If an infection reaches the brain, it may require surgery on the brain, reduction of intracranial pressure, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Other bacterial infections, such as meningitis, may necessitate long hospital stays.<\/p>\n

    An infection in the oral cavity can easily spread through the circulatory system (blood or lymphatic vessels) to the space between the lungs. Once it reaches this area, the infection can affect all organs located in this space: the oesophagus, trachea, lungs, heart, as well as large blood vessels such as the aorta or the superior vena cava.<\/p>\n

    If you develop septicaemia, a blood infection that spreads throughout the body, it can be life-threatening. Some rarer, but still serious, complications include Ludwig's angina, which can close off the airways and cause suffocation.<\/p>\n

    There is no longer any need to remind you that a dental abscess requires urgent treatment to prevent it from degenerating into a more serious situation. If you act promptly and strictly follow the treatment prescribed by the dentist, then dental abscesses can heal easily and quickly, without leaving long-term traces.<\/p>\n

    An abscess can be one of the most painful dental conditions, and it often develops rapidly. The pain is caused by the pressure of the abscess. Draining the pus through a fistula reduces the pressure. The pain will disappear. However, the infection still needs to be treated.<\/p>\n
