The appearance of dental caries is not a natural process, as many people believe, but a bacterial disease. This bacterium can enter the bloodstream and cause other problems in the body.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nBacteria combines in the body with mucus and food debris and creates a sticky mass called plaque, sticking to the surface of the teeth. The bacteria in plaque feed on ingested sugar and produce an acid that extracts calcium and phosphorus from the teeth. Gradually, if the sticky deposits are not removed, the tooth erodes \u2013 first the enamel (the surface layer) and then the dentine (the body of the tooth). If unchecked, decay can progress even further, into the pulp containing the nerve in the centre of the tooth, causing toothache.<br \/>\nThe appearance and development of dental caries depend on three factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>bacterial presentation<\/li>\n<li>availability of sugar for the bacteria to feed on<\/li>\n<li>vulnerability of the tooth's email<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Poor nutrition and inadequate oral hygiene are likely the main factors behind the development of cavities. People who consume large amounts of refined carbohydrates, especially foods with a sticky texture that adhere to the tooth surface, or who frequently snack without cleaning their teeth afterwards, are more prone to dental caries.<br \/>\nThere are individuals who, for reasons not yet understood, seem to have unusually acidic saliva and\/or higher-than-normal levels of bacteria in their mouths, making them more vulnerable to the appearance and development of dental cavities.<br \/>\nTooth decay, in general, does not show any symptoms until it is very advanced. Then, the tooth may become sensitive to hot, cold, and sugar consumption. Subsequently, toothache may appear.<\/p>\n<h3>Natural remedies for toothache<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Marigolds, chamomile, mint and yarrow are natural anti-inflammatories.<\/li>\n<li>Clove essential oil is very good for toothache. It is applied topically, and if it is too concentrated, it can be diluted with olive oil.<\/li>\n<li>Alcohol-free gentian extract can be used as an antibacterial mouthwash. If inflammation persists, at bedtime, place a few drops of gentian extract on a piece of sterile gauze and press it onto the gum next to the decayed tooth. Repeat the process for three nights to destroy bacteria and reduce inflammation.<\/li>\n<li>Kava kava, St John's Wort, white willow bark and Himalayan willow have analgesic properties. White willow bark also has an anti-inflammatory effect.,<\/li>\n<li>Sage has anti-inflammatory properties. Boil a cup of water with two teaspoons of dried, chopped sage added, then leave to steep and strain. Cool to room temperature and rinse your mouth with the resulting mixture, several times a day.<\/li>\n<li>Thyme is a natural antiseptic that reduces the level of bacteria in the mouth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Recommendations for dental health<\/h3>\n<p>Eat a larger quantity of raw vegetables and fruits, as these contain minerals that reduce saliva acidity.<br \/>\nAvoid fizzy drinks as they are rich in phosphates, which deplete calcium and affect tooth enamel.<br \/>\nAvoid refined sugar and concentrated sweets.<br \/>\nDo not smoke.<br \/>\nFollow a proper oral hygiene routine. Brush your teeth after meals and clean them. This is the only way you can protect yourself from plaque formation.<br \/>\nDo not take chewable vitamin C supplements as they can erode tooth enamel. Tablets or powder do not pose this risk.<br \/>\nBefore consulting a dentist to eliminate toothache or abscesses, wash the affected area with salt water (\u00bd tablespoon of salt to 200 ml of warm water).<br \/>\nEven if you don't currently have problems with the appearance of tooth decay, regular visits to the dentist are important as they can help prevent existing problems from escalating and treat symptoms before they become more advanced.<br \/>\nBook your appointment at the dental practice now and take care of your dental health!<\/p>\n<p>Bibliography<br \/>\nNutrition and Natural Remedies, Phyllis A.
